******This review is tailored towards all NRI and non-Indians looking for an affordable cosmetic treatment in India*****
As a Canadian from Toronto, I visit India yearly and combine trips with procedures like hair transplants, which cost 4-5x more back home. I found New Roots in Kolkata via online research for my FUE/DHI surgery.
Below are the PROs and CONs on the next day of surgery
PROS
Dr. Shelly's Professionalism: She was the deciding factor for me. Unlike other clinics where consultations felt salesy, Dr. Shelly came across as a genuine person - knowledgeable, reassuring, and focused on my needs. I immediately felt in safe hands, which is crucial when traveling abroad for surgery.
Efficient Operations: The busy clinic ran smoothly with well-planned steps, minimizing surprises for international visitors.
Skilled Technicians: Attentive and professional, they ensured a comfortable surgery. They provided lunch for me and my wife (who was waiting outside), a thoughtful touch you rarely get in North American clinics
Value-Added Service: Dr. Shelly added extra grafts beyond the planned amount at no additional cost, which boosted my confidence in the outcome. The next day, during my head wash, the receptionist's detailed guidance was spot-on, she's a standout staff member, managing crowds with poise and dedication
Affordable Pricing: Hands down the best value I found. DHI India quoted me 4x more and matched the Toronto prices. For the quality (good surgeon, techs, and processes), New Roots offers unbeatable bang for the buck, perfect for budget-conscious NRIs.
CONS
Payment Hassles: ONLY CASH ACCEPTED, with a 5% surcharge for credit cards, very frustrating for NRIs not carrying wads of rupees around. India's push toward digital payments makes this outdated. I struggled during Puja holidays when banks were closed. Clinics handling large transactions should offer seamless online options (RBI guidelines might even flag this as an issue worth reporting if it persists).
Invoicing Inconsistencies: Picky as I am about paperwork (a habit from Canada), the initial 10k INR payment got a proper tax invoice with CGST/SGST, but the balance was just a plain receipt. It didn't specify the treatment type (just "hair transplant"), which felt ambiguous. Had this been in Canada, I could easily raise these incidents as red flags for tax fraud or asking for AML audits under Canadian jurisdictions (CRA). However the receptionist promised to follow up with accounts for a corrected invoice, but this should be a standard.
Technician-Heavy Procedure: About 85% of the work was done by technicians, with Dr. Shelly and another doctor overseeing ~15%. This seems industry norm and most clinics follow the same.
Privacy Lapses: The OT door was sometimes left open during surgery, allowing people outside to peek inside—avoidable and potentially against medical privacy norms.
Inconsistent Post-Op Advice: Different technicians gave varying tips on diet, sleep, etc., leading to confusion. There should be a single, unified communication channel to avoid mixed messages. I have a final one from the receptionist now.
Review Prompting Timing: Patients are asked to leave google reviews during the next-day head wash follow-up at the clinic itself. While reviews might be genuine, the timing creates subtle pressure—many might hold back honest feedback if issues arise later, skewing perceptions unfairly. I couldn't have written this long essay sitting there.
Hygiene and Comfort Details: Everyone removes shoes upon entry (common in India), but no slippers are provided, which overlooks foot hygiene for patients. In NA/European clinics, this is standard to maintain cleanliness without discomfort.
Overall Verdict ( Day 2 )
NEW ROOTS DELIVERED EXCELLENT RESULTS—great surgeon, skilled team, and solid processes at a fraction of Canadian/US costs. Administrative issues (payments, invoices) didn’t impact treatment quality but could irk NRIs. I recommend "New Roots" to everyone and will update this review at 15 days, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year.

I recently underwent a hair transplant at New Roots Clinic under Dr. Shelly, and I must say, the entire experience was excellent. From the moment I walked in, the staff was extremely polite, supportive, and professional.
Dr. Shelly and her team explained everything clearly and made sure I was comfortable throughout the procedure. Their attention to detail and patient care really stood out.
What pleasantly surprised me was the complimentary lunch they offered — a small gesture, but it made me feel genuinely cared for.
It's rare to find a clinic that combines skill, hospitality, and warmth so well. I’m really happy with their service and highly recommend New Roots to anyone considering a hair transplant.
Thank you, New Roots! 🙌
